Bookmarks play a critical role in organizing passages of text. You can use this feature to note what passage in the text triggered you to assign a code.

To create a bookmark, click on the “Add Bookmark” button at any point in the coding process. You may do this either from the main coding page, or from within the actual display of bookmarks. A separate window will open up.



Note: If you highlight the trigger text before you click the “Add Bookmark” button, that text will automatically be pasted into the “trigger” field of the bookmark.

Bookmarks are created using the following fields:

• Trigger Text - The specific passage in the paragraph that triggered the use of a code or that triggered some interesting, helpful or otherwise memorable thought. If you highlight the trigger text in the document, it is automatically pasted into the correct field when you click the “Add Bookmark” button. (required)
• View Permissions - “View Permissions” allows coders to keep their bookmarks private (only visible to the creator) or open for others to view. Selecting “Creator and Primary Account Holder” allows coders to create bookmarks that won't be shared with others, but which will be visible to the owner of the dataset. Selecting “All Dataset Users” will display a coder's bookmarks to all the other peers who are working on the same dataset.
• Code - A code associated with the bookmark. If you start typing the name of an existing code, the system will “suggest” codes that start with the same letters.
• Memo - Any observations made by the coder (ex. reasoning behind the coding, mental notes).

To view bookmarks while working in a particular dataset, press the “View Bookmarks” button on the main coding page.



To access and edit all the bookmarks across all datasets (or a filtered sub-set), on the dashboard page select View Bookmarks under Tools and Data Management on the right side of the screen. All bookmarks can also be accessed by selecting “View Bookmarks” from the “Bookmarks” drop-down menu. Bookmarks may then be filtered by dataset.

You can also export bookmarks from PCAT to use in other applications; this may be done when viewing all bookmarks. Click on the desired file type on the top right part of the screen; supported file types are CSV, RTF, HTML, and XML. There is the option to include the entire paragraph text associated with a bookmark (“Export Paragraph Text”), and any selected filters will apply to the output.
